Fall Bald Eagle Migration

Keep an eye out for an increase in Bald Eagle sightings in Schoharie County as migrating eagles from the north move into the area. While some will pass through, others will settle in for the winter. A few great spots along the Schoharie County Eagle Trail to observe them include Viewing Site #14 at Mine Kill State Park’s lower reservoir and Viewing Sites #9 and #10 at the Franklinton Vlaie Wildlife Area, where migrating eagles and a nesting pair have been spotted fishing the pond. Additionally, a new 4-year-old adult Bald Eagle has been seen around Cobleskill for the past six months—he may even decide to make it his permanent home.

The county’s Bald Eagle population nearly doubles during the winter months. They typically remain until February or March before returning north or staying to find a mate. Each year, I discover one or two new nests in the county, so if you happen to spot an eagle carrying nesting materials, please let us know!

Unfortunately, there have been fewer Bald Eagle sightings along the Schoharie Creek/Route 30 corridor this year. Due to the NYC DEP holding back water from the Schoharie Reservoir, no water has been released over the Gilboa Dam all summer. This has led to lower water levels and fewer fish for the eagles to hunt, forcing them to search for food in the fields instead. However, all of our local eagles along the Schoharie County Eagle Trail are still around, often seen pairing up and perched together in trees.

Support our ongoing efforts and educational initiatives by joining as a Friend of the Eagle Trail HERE!

Join us for the annual Fall Migration Bald Eagle Watch at Mine Kill State Park on Saturday, November 23rd, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Help us spot and count Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, and other raptors traveling through the area. We’ll have chairs, a few spotting scopes, and binoculars available for those who need them. Last year, we spotted around 20 eagles, shared stories, and discussed tips for eagle-watching and photography. We’ll also have personal gifts for all our eagle enthusiasts who join us!

The 2025 Eagles of Schoharie County calendars are now available in Cobleskill and online at www.EagleCalendar.com

The Schoharie County Eagle Trail also offers educational talks to local community groups and schools in the area. They can be contacted by email at nywild@gmail.com.
